The Bridge

The Bridge: A School/Community Partnership is a non-profit organization that recruits, screens, trains, and places volunteers in the Melrose Public Schools.

Are you someone who is reliable and friendly? Do you enjoy being with young people? Are you interested in education? Could you give some time, even a small amount, to students who are eager to learn? The Bridge: A School/Community Partnership offers you the opportunity to become a Melrose Public Schools volunteer.

Volunteer tasks with the Melrose Public Schools are varied, ranging from long-term commitments like serving on a PTO board or as a room parent, to one-time opportunities like visiting a class to read a story or sharing your professional expertise. You can make a difference by making a community connection in our classrooms regardless of the amount of time you can offer.

Many volunteer opportunities are in-person, but others can be done virtually, meaning that volunteering can be as simple as blocking a short window of time on your calendar and closing your office door.

One amazing way to enrich our students' experience is by sharing your knowledge and expertise. This can include things like a presentation to an individual class, a pre-recorded video presentation (that could be watched by multiple classes) followed by live or written Q&A, mentoring or giving interviews to MHS seniors who are working on their capstone projects, or participating in a career panel discussion.

About The Bridge

The Bridge: A School/Community Partnership is a non-profit organization that recruits, screens, trains, and places volunteers in the Melrose Public Schools.

Volunteers are used to support, augment, and enhance programs in the Franklin Early Childhood Center, all five elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school. Bridge volunteers are parents, retirees, grandparents, professionals, high school and college students. In short -- community members willing to share their time and talents with our students!

Volunteers must register online with The Bridge annually. Once your registration is processed, and you have an up-to-date CORI on file (see below), you will be added to the volunteer list. Information about volunteer opportunities come from your student’s teachers, your school, your PTO leaders, and from The Bridge Coordinator of Volunteers. For more information please contact Lisa Lewis, Coordinator of Volunteers at llewis@melroseschools.com.

When you register online you will be asked to read and sign off on a confidentiality code and guideline for volunteers document. It is linked to the registration, and can also be found here.

*PLEASE NOTE: All new volunteers must also complete The CORI Request Form (green paper). That form must be completed in person with a government issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. Please contact Lisa Lewis, Coordinator of Volunteers at llewis@melroseschools.com to make a CORI appointment, or ask at the front desk of your students' school. CORIs are good for three school years; registered volunteers will receive reminders when their CORI expires. CORIs conducted with The Bridge are valid for volunteering in all Melrose Public Schools.
