Technology Department

Summary of Accomplishments

Technology within the Melrose Public School system saw significant change and improvement during the 2007-2008 school year. Several projects were completed over the summer months and during the school year while several others were kicked off and remain in progress as the current school year comes to a close.

Among the more significant steps taken during the past year was the securing of funding for the use of fiber optic technology throughout the school district. This project is currently ongoing and scheduled for completion by the start of the 2008-2009 school year. This project will greatly improve the connectivity throughout the school district.

The summer of 2007 saw technology throughout the school district undergo several upgrades and improvements. This was especially true at Melrose High School. A “departmental lab” approach was taken to the deployment of workstations throughout the school. Several new, smaller computer labs (5-10 workstations) were installed for the various educational departments while the workstations located in the existing larger labs were replaced with new, upgraded equipment. This approach provides more options for students and teachers to access both the internal and external technical resources available.

In September 2007 the Technology Department monitored the startup and integration of the new technology associated with the opening of the new Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School. The technical infrastructure and systems installed at the school were brought online smoothly and without major issue. This project also came in on time and on budget. The Technology Department continues to provide support services at MVMMS throughout the school year.

In addition to the upgrade and replacement of hardware throughout the school system the district also deployed a Content Management System (CMS). This sophisticated software package makes the task of editing and maintaining the various websites throughout the school district simple and user friendly. The CMS will be fully deployed and functional before the start of the 2008-2009 school year.

The summer of 2008 will see a continuation of the improvement and upgrade of the technology in use within the Melrose school district. Melrose High School will undergo a total technological transformation over the summer months. This “technical overhaul” includes the upgrade of the technical infrastructure at the school and the installation of SmartBoard technology in the classrooms. This project will bring MHS up to the technical standard already in place at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School.

The upgrade of technology during the summer of 2008 will also reach out to the elementary schools in the district as well. Both the Hoover and Winthrop Schools will deploy new computer labs at their respective sites. These labs will be outfitted with new workstations and improved connectivity providing the students and teachers at both schools with more efficient and effective technical resources as part of the overall educational process.
