Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School students make all the difference!  Are you interested in joining a Youth Action Team?  The Melrose Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is looking to expand its Youth Action Team and may be interested in you!

The Youth Action Team, known as YAT, is a Coalition work group that has been around for almost six years.  The Youth Action Team has led initiatives such as:  1) Facilitating focus groups to gauge Melrose youth’s opinions around substance use.  2) Helping to organize Healthy Alternative activities and events for teens.  3) Creating Youth –Led Social Marketing campaigns to promote substance abuse awareness, making positive choices and engaging in healthy activities.  4) Teaching Media Literacy lessons to Melrose elementary-aged youth.  5) Conducting Environmental Scan assessments of teen-identified party “hotspots” and making recommendations to City officials for improvements in these areas.  6) Assessing the amount of Alcohol Advertising in public spaces in Melrose.  7) Advocating for local and state policies which support the creation of healthy environments for youth

The Youth Action Team meets the first Monday of each month from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor project room at the Middle School and receive a stipend for their work.  If you are interested in joining the Youth Action Team, please contact the Melrose Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, Jennifer Kelly, at 781-979-4128 or at jkelly@cityofmelrose.org for an application.  Thank you!
