Melrose
Veterans Memorial
Middle School students
are invited to participate in the state-wide initiative called “No Name Calling
Day” on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. The goal is to
black out bullying, and to continue to encourage sustainable acts of kindness all yearlong. Students are
encouraged to participate in the Black Out Bullying initiative by wearing black
shirts and/or black clothes. Other
activities might be to sign a pledge at lunch to take a stand against bullying
and name calling and to randomly perform acts of kindness. Wear Black to school on January 25, 2012!
The official website for the Governor of Massachusetts
states, “Bullying is an important issue, and this is an opportunity for us to
begin a culture change. It is our hope that this event will be a stepping stone
for making progress towards curbing violence within the Commonwealth. On May 3, 2010 Governor Patrick signed his
Anti Bullying Legislation. Within this piece of legislation Governor Patrick
determined that the fourth Wednesday of January will officially be known as “No
Name Calling Day”. As Governor
Patrick’s Statewide Youth Council, we are currently working towards curbing
youth violence within the Commonwealth. We see bullying as a universal issue
throughout the nation. The previous Youth Council had laid the foundation for
our Council by advocating for the passing of the anti-bullying legislation. We
recognized the importance of educating the youth of the Commonwealth on this
pressing issue and are continuing the efforts of our predecessors by
implementing a statewide anti-bullying initiative.” For more information, contact the main office
