There will be a school-wide MVMMS Memorial Day Assembly on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in the auditorium. It honor of our guests, it is also "Dress-Up Day." Boys are encouraged to wear a shirt with a collar and a tie; girls are encouraged to wear a dress, skit or business attire. The Memorial Day Assembly will begin with the Pledge of Allegiance with the flags presented by the Honor Guard. The National Anthem with be sung Joey G., a second grade student. The MVMMS Band will perform "Patriotic Trilogy" conducted by Mr. Buckley. John W., 8A, will deliver his student address. The MVMMS Orchestra will perform "America the Beautiful," "Marines Hymn," and "God Bless America," directed by Mrs. Weeks. Kelsey M., 8B, will deliver her student address. Principal Brow will give his Memorial Day message with help from singers JacquelineA., 7B; Katelyn P, 8C; Alyssa A., 7B; Marlena D., 8B; Sarah R, 8C; and Melissa F., 8B. There will be a special presentation of flowers for the Knoll Memorial, the WWI Boulder and the Michael Hughes Memorial located on the campus. Next, Lia K., 8B, will perform "Two Dances" by Schubert on solo piano. Eli K. (solo cello), and Mrs. Carrie Kourkoumelis (harp) will perform "The Swan" by Camille Saint-Saens. Prior to the introduction of seventy-to-eighty United States Veterans, the following community leaders are scheduled to address the student body: Massachusetts State Representative Katherine Clark, Massachusetts State Senator Richard Tisei, Massachusetts State Senator Thomas McGee, Melrose Mayor Rob Dolan, and Melrose Superintendent of Schools Joseph Casey. Amanda R., 8B, will sing "America the Beautiful." The United States Presidential Academic Awards will be issued to graduating eighth grade students and the Cliff Somerville Memorial Student-Athlete Awards will be presented to an eighth grade boy and to an eighth grade girl. The assembly will end with a moment of silence followed by double "Taps" played by Jordon R., 8B and Julia F., 8A. Parents are welcome to attend; seating is very limited.
