Melrose
Veterans Memorial
Middle School students
are invited to participate in the Second Annual Martin Luther King Day of
Service on Saturday, January 14, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. – Noon. Make it a do on, not a day off. Students are invited to gather in the Melrose Veterans Memorial
Middle School cafeteria at
9:00 a.m. on Saturday, where they will choose among the sponsored community service projects for the
morning. All MVMMS students are expected
to perform community service each school year; this activity will help fulfill the community
service requirement. The Melrose Human
Rights Commission in collaboration with City of Melrose government, local community agencies, and
groups is sponsoring this Day of Service and Potluck dinner on the Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day weekend. The Day of Service, on the Saturday of the
weekend, includes service projects located throughout the city. This is in
addition to the community-wide potluck dinner and speaker on Monday evening that
we have sponsored for many years. This year’s Day of Service will be Saturday, January
14, 2012, and the dinner will be held on Monday, January 16, 2012.
Some of the projects planned are meal packaging for Stop
Hunger Now, Valentine’s for Melrose senior
citizens, writing letters to United
States service men and women, and a food
drive for A Servant’s Heart Food Pantry. All participants will reconvene at the Middle
School at Noon for a closing ceremony and a thank-you lunch of pizza. Please spread the word among your local
family and friends. This is a
community-wide event and we are hoping a broad cross-section of residents will
participate. For more information,
