A Melrose Veterans Memorial
Middle School student will be
competing in the All-Ireland International Irish Dance Competition on February 11, 2012 in Dublin, Ireland. Mia F., 8B, has
been dancing since she was five years old.“ Irish step dance is a style of dance with its roots in traditional Irish
dance. Two types of shoes are worn. Hard shoes, which make sounds similar to
tap shoes, and soft shoes, which are similar to ballet slippers. Dancers
stiffen their upper bodies while performing quick and intricate footwork. Costumes
are considered important for stage presence, especially in competition. There
are several levels of competition available for both individuals and groups. Riverdance,
an Irish step dancing entry has greatly contributed its popularity. Competitive step dancing has grown steadily since the mid
1900's. Dance competitions are divided
by age and level of expertise. The names for the competition levels vary around
the world.” Mia won several step dancing
competitions; her most recent accomplishment was at Saugus High School
auditorium in December 2011. Good luck to Mia at the International Competition!
