MVMMS Acts of Kindness Summit
Monday-Friday, November 30 - December 4, 2009

The First Annual Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School "Acts of Kindness Summit" will be held on Monday-Friday, November 30, 2009 – December 4, 2009.  This anti-bullying program will focus on acts of kindness.  The goals of the Summit are as follows: 1) To promote school-wide acts of kindness.  2) To hear stories of the positive impact of acts and kindness and the negative impact of bullying.  3) To highlight the importance of the following five personal qualities stressed at Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School: honesty, responsibility, self-management, sociability, and self-esteem.  There will be a host of assemblies, skits, lessons, videos, guest speakers, projects, assignments, and other activities.

On Monday, November 30, 2009, the Summit will open with "Acts of Kindness: A Message from Our School."  This will include a movie filmed on campus to promote acts of kindness.  The first guest speaker will be Michael J. Chase, founder of the Kindness Center.  His presentation is titled "Discover the Life-Changing Power of Kindness."

On Tuesday, December 1, 2009, the Summit continues with guest speaker Brigitte Berman, author of Dorie Witt's Guide to Surviving BulliesBrigitte is a teenager who was bullied in middle school.  She wrote about her experiences and ideas on how to help others in similar situations.  In the afternoon, there will be an assembly titled "Connor's Story: You Will Not Always Be Small."  Connor's mother will share her story of how son was bullied and picked on for joining a middle school wrestling team.  Connor is now the captain of his wrestling team; Connor's mom will share how painful bullying can be to the entire family.   The Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Drama Club will also perform an anti-bullying skit.

On Wednesday, December 2, 2009, the Ryan Patrick Halligan Story will be presented by his father John Halligan.  Ryan was a teen-age boy who committed suicide due to bullying and humiliation at the hands of his peers.

On Thursday, December 3, 2009, a presentation titled "Peer Power: From Bystanders to Allies" will be presented by Rebecca Mooney and Alice Wadley, from the Melrose Alliance Against Violence, with the help of Melrose High School Action Board students.  Later, male students will view a video titled, "Boys on Bullying," while the female students will view "The Power of Girls: Inside and Out."  Both films were produced by Jeanne Blake.

On Friday, December 4, 2009, students will participate in Rachel's Challenge – a challenge to be thoughtful and kind to others – presented by the family of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School shootings.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) reported in its November 2009 newsletter that "when it comes to bullying… students at the middle school level are more likely (than high school students) to face hostile school climates."  Therefore, we need to pay particular attention to our students at the middle school level.  Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School is thankful to those who donated and to community support for bringing these speakers and programs to our school family.  Parents are welcome to attend these assemblies to held in the auditorium.  For more information on the Acts of Kindness Summit, contact Mr. Stanton, Assistant Principal at mstanton@melrose.mec.edu or Mr. Brow, Principal, at tbrow@melrose.mec.edu.  Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School is a school where everyone belongs.
