If at any time you have questions or would like to volunteer in the
library, please contact someone on the library committee. The committee
members are as follows: Johanna Cohan, Fae Cohen, Beth Carroll Denney,
Sophia Flaxen, Linda Giesecke, Sioban Haldeman, Jackie Havey, Wendy
Matusovich, Taylor Rubbins, Laura Sampson, Melinda Stockwell, Ceane
Willis.
There are still classes which could use a few more volunteers. This year we have opened up the library to volunteers who have younger children at home. This seems to have helped staff the classes in kindergarten, generally a tough grade to cover. However we are still very short in first grade, second grade and third grade.
If you have any interest in helping with your child's library class, please contact Johanna Cohan (johannacohan@comcast.net or 781-620-1634). It's very easy and your kids will love you for it. Even if you are not in one of the “needy” classes (1-3), the library would still welcome some extra hands.
The commitment is about 45 minutes to an hour each time you work, which can be as often as weekly or as infrequently as monthly. Whatever works in your schedule is helpful. The times for each class are listed below:
Horton: Monday, 9:15-9:45 Florino/Tarpey: Monday, 1:30-2 LaVita: Wednesday, 10:30-11 Savarino: Tuesday, 10-10:30 Dembro: Wednesday, 1:30-2 Kostandos: Tuesday, 1:30-2 Barbagallo: Monday, 2-2:15 Murphy: Monday, 11-11:30 McDermod: Thursday, 1:30-2 Sarasin: Tuesday, 1-1:30 Capaldo: Thursday, 1-1:30 Kopp: Monday, 1-1:30
Remember, as always, if you decide to volunteer with your pre-school aged child, he or she will have to be able to follow the rules the students will be following. It's not easy for some children, but so far our preschoolers in the library have done a great job. Also remember, you will need to be registered with The Bridge, which you can do in the Horace Mann office.
The Annual Horace Mann Book Fair is scheduled for December 1-4, and is a great way to buy new books for your children. It is also a great opportunity to give back to the school; a percentage of the profits goes directly to Horace Mann. All children and parents will have the opportunity to buy books at the fair during their regularly scheduled library time. This is a great way to kick off your holiday shopping.
We encourage kindergarten parents to come to the fair when their children visit on Monday to purchase books with your child. If you would like your child to buy a book but cannot accompany him or her on Monday, please send the money in with your child's name on it. All participation is optional.
The fair will also be open to you during some non-school hours and some in-school hours other than library times. These details will be included in a later notice.

Every year books are donated to the libraries in
Melrose by parents, former parents, and organizations. Since each library
is unique and has specific needs, it's not always easy for people to know just
the right book to donate. Because of this, we and all the other schools in
Melrose, have put together wish lists at Amazon.com so you can shop online
and either have the book shipped to you or directly to the school.
Either
way, we will know it is from you and a book plate will be placed in the front of
the book with your or your child's name on it. We hope you will take a look and
know that the the students and staff appreciate your generosity.
We'd like to remind parents to have your child return
his library book to school. There are library bins in every classroom
for returned library books.
If you've received notice of an overdue book and can't find it, here are the library's replacement costs for lost books:
$3 for magazines
$5 for paperback
$15 for hardcover
Payment,
along with your child's name and class should be placed in a sealed
envelope addressed to the attention of Johanna Cohan. Please place
the envelope in the Library mailbox in the Horace Mann office. Thank
you.
