November 2008 5th grade news
In math, the fifth grade is currently working on constructing different types of graphs and graphing ordered pairs. In the coming weeks we will begin to practice multiplication of whole numbers and decimals as well as division using one-digit and two-digit divisors.
We are continuing to discover the origins of our country by examining the routes of the early European explorers. We have also discussed the different motivations for exploring a “New World.” Soon we will be learning about the rise and fall of both the Aztec and Inca Empires. After those topics we will begin to examine the establishment of a permanent European presence in the Americas.
As budding writers, the fifth graders are constantly at work editing, revising, and expanding their thoughts into the written word. Journal writing and paragraph development are enforced during our literacy block. The expansion of paragraphs into larger essays is on the horizon. We continue to work on grammatical conventions as well as using different types of resources.
In science, we are finishing our discussions on simple, compound, and complex machines. We have discovered the true scientific definitions of force, work, and friction. We will now be analyzing various real-world examples of these machines and how they have changed over time. In the near future, we will begin to delve into Isaac Newton's Laws of Motion.
