October 2008 classroom news Both third grades are off to a good start! We were happy to have
the opportunity to meet with you at our fall open house and we look
forward to our parent-teacher conferences.
Fall finds us having just planned our fall field trip to Plimoth
Plantation and The Mayflower II. We will be visiting this living
museum in November. The trip will really bring home 17th century
historical events and living in New England (in and around Plymouth,
Mass.), which will be a big part of social studies during the first
term.
In health, we are currently working on developing and using our
critical thinking skills. After that, we will start a safety unity
about safety at home and away.
In science, we will be studying desert plant and wildlife
adaptations. At the conclusion of our class study, the students will
be given an opportunity to complete a science project featuring animal
and plant adaptations in the Sonoran Desert. The students will have
three weeks for this project.
We're off to a great start in math. The focus to date has been on
place value and comparing whole numbers using mathematical symbols and
language. Good job, everyone, with increased speed and mastery of fact
families! As we begin our second unit of study, we'll be working more
with estimation as well as broadening our understanding of money and
time. Two of the trickiest concepts include making correct change and
calculating elapsed time. Don't pass up real world opportunities to
make use of classroom learning. For example, while at the grocery
store, children can help calculate correct change or figure out how
long the shopping trip took from start to finish.
