October 2008 Second Grade News

English Language Arts: We have just finished Theme 1 in Storytown.  It is a comprehensive reading program that includes phonics and spelling, reading skills and strategies, vocabulary and grammar, as well as a writing component. With Theme 2, we will be focusing on making predictions by using story details and prior knowledge, as well as discussing plot and story structure.

Mathematics: Addition and subtraction will become the major focus in mathematics.  Students will be solving problems requiring two-digit computation.  It is critical that students know their math facts without hesitation and need to practice them nightly in order to achieve this proficiency.

Classroom Routine: Both classes continue to develop classroom routines. We are working with the students to improve their listening skills and ability to follow directions.  This promotes an optimal learning environment with the most effective use of time.  We appreciate the ongoing support of parents as we work together for a successful year in second grade.
