All volunteer activities take place during the school day unless noted specifically as occurring before or after school.

- The Early Childhood Center is not in need of additional volunteers at this time.

- Reading Volunteers are needed for two exciting new programs at the Hoover School. Many volunteers are needed to make them work.
In the first program volunteers will work with one or more second or third grade students to help improve their rate of fluency when reading as well as their understanding of what they are reading. These volunteers will work for one or more 45 minute block(s) between 10am and 1pm.
In the second program volunteers will work with small groups of 4-6 students in all grades K-5. These volunteers may choose to work for one, two or three hours between 9am and noon and between 12:20pm and 2:20pm one or more days a week. They will be assigned to classrooms where their tasks will include listening to students read, facilitating discussions about reading to improve comprehension, or facilitating activities such as reading exercises that will be prepared by the teacher.
- English Language Arts Volunteers are needed from 9am until 10am three mornings a week at the Lincoln School and from 9:00 to 10:30 at the Winthrop School. At the Lincoln School, the volunteer may choose any three mornings excluding Monday. This volunteer will work with a small group of third grade students who struggle with assigned tasks. The teacher will provide materials and guidance. At the Winthrop School the volunteer will be helping with small groups of second grade students, providing an extra pair of hands with tasks created by the teacher.
- Math Volunteers are needed any day of the week from 1pm-2pm at the Winthrop School. This volunteer will help small groups of second grade students with math tasks created by the teacher.
- Classroom Volunteers are interested in helping children develop learning skills and can give a minimum of 1 1/2-2 hours a week during the school day. Tasks might include supervising individual or small group activities, listening to readers, proofreading, typing stories, monitoring computer activities, helping with special projects, and/or copying materials needed by the teacher.
- A Book Club Volunteer is needed at the Lincoln School one day a week for an hour between 8:30-10:00. This volunteer will provide enrichment for students who excel in reading.
- Junior Achievement Volunteers teach five one hour classes with materials provided by JA. Volunteers are given the lesson plans and activities that allow them to present the following materials to the following grades: Kindergarten - "Ourselves", Grade 1 - "Our Family", Grade 2 - "Our Community", Grade 3 - "Our City", Grade 4 - "Our Region" and Grade 5 - "Our Nation".

- Math Tutors work with students who are struggling to succeed with Middle School math. These tutors work with individual students and small groups. They work during the school day at times that are mutually agreed upon by the tutor and school personnel.
- Math Enrichment Volunteers work with a group of advanced students who are eager for additional challenge. These volunteers work for one class period (approximately one hour) per week that usually fall between 11am and 2:05pm.
- Library Volunteers work two hours or more each week with the library media specialist and the library aide. They do a variety of tasks that allow students to make the best use of the library/media center. Library volunteers are needed during the school day and after school

- Foreign Language Tutors work with students struggling with one of the languages offered at MHS...Spanish, French, Italian, or German. Volunteer tutors work for a minimum of one hour a week after school from 2:10-3:10.
- Math Tutors work with students struggling with Math. These are often students who are having difficulty with pre-algebra II and geometry. Volunteer tutors work for a minimum of one hour a week after school from 2:10-3:10.
- Robot Team Volunteers will help MHS students win this year's competition! An engineering background, computer knowledge, or a pure love of mechanisms and gizmos is all that is required. The iRaiders robot team of Melrose High School is seeking volunteers to work with the students on the team on Tuesday or Thursday afternoon from 2:30 to 4:00PM through December 10th. Volunteer s may volunteer for any day/days they can be available. We have a Google calendar that is used to sign up for time slots. Volunteer mentors will work with three student mini-teams that are building small desktop VEX robots (see www.vexrobotics.com). A vast resource of information exists at www.vexforum.com to help mentors both inside and outside the classroom. Our goal is to get to a VEX competition at WPI in early December.

- After School Enrichment Volunteers provide homework help to students between 3:00-4:30 on any day(s) of the week. Volunteers are needed at all of the MPS elementary schools

- Vision and Hearing Screening Volunteers work between 8:30am and 11:30am on an as needed basis to help detect the vision and hearing problems that might inhibit a student's ability to learn. All screeners are trained. No medical experience is necessary.
- Guest Speakers allow their names to be listed in the Melrose School Human Resource Directory. These volunteers have special talents, interests or knowledge that they are willing to share with our students by providing a talk or demonstration. They are not available on a regular basis but are willing to have teachers contact them if the topic they offer is relevant to that which is being taught.
