Below is a listing of open positions for which volunteers are needed.

If nothing listed strikes you, but you would like to volunteer, please call Emily and learn about the volunteer opportunities that become available throughout the school year.

All volunteer activities take place during the school day unless noted specifically as occurring before or after school.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER, TITLE I and PRE-KINDERGARTEN

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

  • Classroom Volunteers are interested in helping children develop learning skills and can give a minimum of 1 1/2-2 hours a week during the school day. Tasks might include supervising individual or small group activities, listening to readers, proofreading, typing stories, monitoring computer activities, helping with special projects, and/or copying materials needed by the teacher.

  • Office Volunteers help with a variety of office and clerical tasks in the elementary school offices. These volunteers work at least 1/2 hour per week during the school day. Many of these volunteers are needed from 11:45am to 12:15pm to cover the office while the school secretary takes a lunch break. Some of these volunteers work for one or more mornings and help with a variety of clerical tasks.

  • Library Volunteers are willing to help one hour per week or more during the school day. Their activities include checking books in and out, shelving books, preparing overdue notices, helping children locate books, maintaining library supplies, preparing new books for circulation, decorating the library and, in some schools, reading to children. At some schools volunteers who enjoy data entry can also help with the work needed to get the library collection automated.

  • Lunchroom Volunteers are needed to assist during lunch periods from 11:30am to 1:00pm. Lunchroom volunteers work once a week serving hot meals and helping with overall supervision of the lunchroom.

  • Before School Math Tutors are needed either one or two mornings a week before school from 7:30-8:15 AM. Some of these volunteers work with small groups of students who are struggling to be successful in math others work with students who excel in math and need additional challenges.

  • Junior Achievement Volunteers teach five one hour classes with materials provided by JA. Volunteers are given the lesson plans and activities that allow them to present the following materials to the following grades: Kindergarten-"Ourselves", Grade 1-"Our Family, "Grade 2-"Our Community", Grade 3-"Our City", Grade 4-"Our Region" and Grade 5- "Our Nation".

  • Computer Lab Volunteers help teachers who take their students to the computer lab for writing assignments, projects, and Internet information access. Some also assist teachers in monitoring students' work and progress. Volunteers help the teacher where needed.

  • ELL Volunteers help in classrooms by providing additional support to students new to this country for whom English is a second language. These volunteers work as many mornings a week as they are available.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

  • Tutors work with students who are struggling to succeed in Middle School. Some of these dedicated people work for approximately one hour a day on an every other day basis. Others work on the same day each week for one or more hours a week. Tutors either assist with specific subjects such as English, Social Studies, or Math or they provide extra individual attention to students who need help in getting work completed.

  • Math Enrichment Volunteers work with a group of advanced students who are eager for additional challenge. These volunteers work for one class period (approximately one hour) per week.

  • Library Volunteers work two hours or more each week with the library media specialist and the library aide. They do a variety of tasks that allow students to make the best use of the library/media center. Library volunteers are needed during the school day and after school.

HIGH SCHOOL

  • Library Volunteers work two hours or more each week with the library media specialist and the library aide. They do a variety of tasks that allow students to make the best use of the library/media center.

  • Foreign Language Tutors work with students struggling with one of the languages offered at MHS...Spanish, French, Italian, or German. Volunteer tutors work for a minimum of one hour a week after school from 2:10-3:10.

  • Math Tutors work with students struggling with Math. These are often students who are having difficulty with pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and pre-calculus. Volunteer tutors work for a minimum of one hour a week after school from 2:10-3:10.
  • First Robot Team Volunteers will help MHS students win their first competition. If you have an interest in grant writing, networking (talking to people), electronics, machining, programming, cooking, organizing, marketing, or reading popular mechanics, we need your help! Time commitments vary. We can tell you more based on your interests. Many of these volunteers will work evenings or weekends.

SYSTEM WIDE

  • Vision and Hearing Screening Volunteers work between 8:30am and 11:30am on an as needed basis to help detect the vision and hearing problems that might inhibit a student's ability to learn. All screeners are trained. No medical experience is necessary.

  • Guest Speakers allow their names to be listed in the Melrose School Human Resource Directory. These volunteers have special talents, interests or knowledge that they are willing to share with our students by providing a talk or demonstration. They are not available on a regular basis but are willing to have teachers contact them if the topic they offer is relevant to that which is being taught.

THE BRIDGE OFFICE

  • Bridge Office Volunteers assist the coordinator of volunteers with a variety of clerical tasks including data entry. These volunteers work one or more mornings a week to support the work of the centralized volunteer program. People who can help with data entry are especially needed.
