- Reading Volunteers are needed for two exciting programs at the Hoover School. Many volunteers are needed to make them work.
In the first program, called Read Naturally, volunteers will work with one or more second, third or fourth grade students to help improve their rate of fluency when reading as well as their understanding of what they are reading. These volunteers will work for one or more 45 minute block(s). We match students to the times that volunteers have available.
In the second program, called Guided Reading, volunteers will work with small groups of 4-6 students in all grades K-5. These volunteers may choose to work for one, two or three hours during the school day for one or more days a week. They will be assigned to classrooms where their tasks will include listening to students read, facilitating discussions about reading to improve comprehension, or facilitating activities such as reading exercises that will be prepared by the teacher. We match the classes to the times that volunteers have available.
- Math Volunteers are needed at the Hoover School. These volunteers will work with small groups of 4-6 students in all grades K-5. These volunteers may choose to work for one, two or three hours during the school day for one or more days a week. They will be assigned to classrooms in which they will assist teachers with the exercises needed to help students be successful in math. We match the classes to the times that volunteers have available.

- Math Tutors work with students struggling with Math. These are often students who are having difficulty with Algebra II and Geometry. Volunteer tutors work for a minimum of one hour a week after school from 2:10-3:10. Some volunteers work in the evening, for an hour or more after 6pm.
- Sewing Volunteers are people who are comfortable with the use of a sewing machine and are willing to help MHS students learn to sew, follow patterns and succeed in creating their projects for Fashion Class. With more than 20 students in the class our wonderful MHS fashion teacher can use assistance. Days and times vary. If you offer to help we will give you the schedule and you tell us which days and times work for you.
- Science Department Volunteers will help with Science classes but knowledge of science is not required. These volunteers will be an extra pair of hands during labs and/or will help with some of the organizational details freeing a teacher to give more attention to the students. Volunteers will be asked to work a minimum of one class period (approximately one hour) a week. Due to the rotating nature of the MHS schedule, the volunteers schedules will be arranged with the teachers.
- Grant Writing Volunteers will be needed by the Science Department to help support 21st Century Science at MHS. People who are knowledgeable about grant writing will be asked to volunteer to help with grant searches as well as writing. The hope is that with grants we will be able to increase student work in Robotics, Engineering, and Applied Sciences.

- Vision and Hearing Screening Volunteers will work between 8:30am and 11:30am on an as needed basis to help detect the vision and hearing problems that might inhibit a student's ability to learn. All screeners are trained. No medical experience is necessary.
- Guest Speakers will allow their names to be listed in the Melrose School Human Resource Directory. These volunteers have special talents, interests or knowledge that they are willing to share with our students by providing a talk or demonstration. They are not available on a regular basis but are willing to have teachers contact them if the topic they offer is relevant to that which is being taught.
- Robot Team Volunteers will inspire MHS students with a full product development life cycle from design to build. An engineering background, computer knowledge, or a pure love of mechanisms and gizmos is all that is required. The team also needs mentors with skills in fund raising, project management, and team spirit. Mentors are needed to support programs at the high school, middle school, and grammar school levels. The iRaiders robot team of Melrose High School team meets in the evenings two nights a week from September to April. More information can be found at www.usfirst.org. The 8th grade VEX Volunteers may volunteer for any day/days they can be available. The season starts in the fall and runs to January. More information can be found at vexrobotics. The middle school will be fielding two or more Lego League teams which could use volunteers. The grammar school Lego League programs will take place in the fall as a one day boot camp.
